Valve recently released a report regarding the top games of 2021 on Steam and cited that CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the best-selling games this year.

This came as a surprise for many since there was much commercial backlash surrounding its initial release back in December 2020. The game was highly-anticipated and it sold quite well on the market. However, the game had experienced many issues including glitches and some versions straight-up did not work.

A part of the reason why the game did well is the small and one large updates. In November 2021, the game has climbed to the top of Steam’s best sellers, accompanied by positive reviews. The positivity then carried the game to the end of the year and helped it achieve its current position as one of the best-selling games.

Another reason was the game benefitted from being a part of the Steam Winter Sale, where fans can purchase the game for only half of the original price. This proves that many are still interested in the game but perhaps discouraged due to bad reviews from players.

Issues surrounding Cyberpunk 2077

Back in September, CD Projekt Red released update 1.31 of the game that is supposed to fix several bugs. However, some still struggle with glitches within the game.

A Reddit user named The-Toasted-God shared their experience with recorded in-game footage with the newest update on PS4. As fans may know, the PS4 version is considered the buggiest version.

This problem persisted despite the update as The-Toasted-God played the game. After their user got into a car, their user backed the car up. Suddenly, the car exploded and the frame rate slowed down.

On top of that, the issues with Cyberpunk 2077 do not only happen within the game. This year, CD Projekt Red had a giant security breach. The game source code was held for ransom by hackers, which resulted in slowing down the developer’s work on both production and updates.

CD Projekt Red also faced financial issues, especially with the ongoing lawsuit the developer is fighting against an investor due to the buggy launch of the game.

The developer once promised major DLC and the next-gen versions for the game. However, it was not possible to be achieved and instead pushed to upcoming years – 2022 or maybe even 2023. The next big patch, Cyberpunk 2077 1.5, is set for launch in early 2022.

Despite multiple issues, CD Projekt Red president Adam Kiciński has continually expressed his optimism that Cyberpunk 2077 “will sell for years”. It is also now available to play on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S after being previously released for PS4 and Xbox One.

Valve’s Silver Best-Seller List

Steam’s best-sellers list comprises a game’s revenue, including from DLC and microtransactions, but not exactly the number of copies sold. Cyberpunk 2077, however, does not host such features.

Although Valve asked players to take notes that the game is only placed on the Silver tier, it still makes an impressive feat. The Silver tier consists of other titles as well such as The Sims 4, Path of Exile, ARK Survival Evolved, and many more.
