StarCraft 2 WCS Global Finals 2018 Format

This tournament is the conclusion of the StarCraft 2 World Championship Series and it will span over an entire week. The groups have already been decided and the first and second places will advance to the quarterfinals. During the global playoffs, also known as the Round of 16, each of the four groups will have two players from Korea. Not surprisingly, they are among the favourites to advance to the decisive round, but they have strong competition from international superstars such as Serral.

The group stage will be played in a dual format, with best-of-three matches, so luck will play a smaller part in deciding the winners. In the quarterfinals, the single elimination bracket format will be used, so there won’t be any second chances for those who lose. On the bright side, both the quarterfinals and the semi-finals will be played in a best-of-five, while the grand finals will require up to seven games to decide the winner. The prize pool stands at $700,000, with $500,000 being the guaranteed amount and $200,000 was added from War Chest purchases.

Action Packed Weekend at Anaheim Convention Centre

On October 26, the first two matches of Group a and Group B are scheduled, with the corresponding games of Group C and Group D taking place the next day. The two players who win the opening matches will play against each other on the same day, so StarCraft 2 fans will know the names of those who advance to the quarterfinals immediately. The decisive matches will be played over the weekend, starting on Sunday afternoon and concluding late at night.

Maru and TY have met on many occasions this year and the two Korean Terran players are favourites to advance from Group A. Group B is the only one where Korean players are likely to fight for the second place, because Serral is expected to win back-to-back matches. Zest and sOs will give him a run for his money, while HeroMarine is the underdog. Dark is the only Zerg player of Group C, with all his peers playing Protoss, but he’s likely to join his countryman Stats in the quarterfinals. Classic and Rogue play in Group D, where Mexican Terran, Special, tries to cause an upset and advance.
