Osh-Tekk Warriors win Overwatch Saudi Regional Tournament

Overwatch fans are preparing for the World Cup scheduled for early November, a tournament with a guaranteed prize pool of $125,000. $1.7 million were awarded to the most successful teams earlier this year, as the playoffs of the Overwatch League took place in late July. While the international community prepares for the last major event scheduled for 2018, a well-paying tournament has just crowned its winner in the Middle East.

Massive Prize Pool for the Overwatch Saudi Regional Tournament

When the regional tournament was announced earlier this year, the teams from the nine eligible countries got excited. The event was announced to have a simple format, with single elimination matches and best-of-five series throughout the tournament. The first event of this kind in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, it was delayed and rescheduled after the qualifiers didn’t produce the desired effects. When the news broke about the finals being postponed for mid-September, the international audience pretty much lost interest.

However, teams from Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwaiti, Lebanon, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, to miss you and the United Arab Emirates got excited. With a guaranteed prize pool of $266,000, it was more than twice the total amount that will be distributed among the best teams at the upcoming World Cup. Having said this, an extra $360,000 is offered during the group stage, so the actual prize pool is $488,000. Even so, the winners Osh-Tekk Warriors walked away with a cool $160,000 and the runners-up got $66,000.

The Overwatch World Cup 2018 Quarterfinals Decided

As the Paris qualifiers have revealed the names of the last two teams to play at the World Cup, we already know the structure of the quarterfinals. The dates are yet to be decided and bookmakers haven’t posted the odds yet, but the path to the finals is now predictable. France and Canada and meet in the first match after the Europeans have secured their place at the event in front of the fans in Paris. The UK did the same and will face the US in the other quarterfinal between two countries that have the same official language.

Finland is the least populous nation to play at the Overwatch World Cup 2018, against China who has the biggest population. The Asians are favourites to advance to the semi-finals, where they will meet either France or Canada. Last but definitely not least, South Korea plays against Australia in what looks like another mismatch. The Aussies plan on giving the reigning champions a run for their money and cause the biggest upset of the quarterfinals.

At the last and most important Overwatch tournament of 2018, the top four teams will receive identical amounts. The same happened last year, but this time, the prizes have been boosted, so these top four contenders will cash in a $16,000 cheque.
