Twitch streamer completes MoistCr1TiKaL’s ‘impossible’ Halo 2 challenge, earns $20,000

Twitch streamer “JerValiN” has managed to beat one of the hardest video game challenges, MoistCr1TiKaL’s Halo 2 Legendary All Skulls On, or LASO, run with no deaths and won $20,000 for his efforts.

Over the last few weeks, JerValiN practiced his skills and made countless attempts to finish the challenge, finally completing it on August 3, 2022. The challenge was issued by fellow content creator MoistCr1TiKaL two months ago, who posted a $20,000 reward bounty to anyone that could complete the challenge live. The challenge proved incredibly popular with both players and viewers, as the Halo 2 category on Twitch saw over 250,000 hours in watch time in July alone.

MoistCr1TiKaL’s challenge

The player must finish the campaign mode of Halo 2 on the hardest difficulty with all Skulls active save for one. Skulls are an additional difficulty modifier that adds a variety of effects, such as causing weapons to have less ammunition, increasing the durability of foes, and making them more aggressive.

The one skull not enabled was the “Envy” skull which replaces the player’s flashlight with a camouflage device, which makes an already difficult challenge even harder than usual as the player no longer has access to a useful ability to evade enemies or reposition in fights. The challenge also required the player to complete it without having access to the save system to prevent players from cheating death by returning to a previous checkpoint.

For the run to count, a player must have the full Twitch VOD linked with the entire run saved. JerValiN’s successful run lasted six and a half hours, with the full stream being an extra hour long. MoistCr1TiKaL was also watching the run on his stream as the JerValiN’s successful run was nearing its end, cheering him on.

After he won the challenge, JerValiN said, “…I had a lot of pressure, I felt I had to be the first one to do it. I felt like it wouldn’t have been right if it wasn’t me.”

New achievement, old legend

JerValiN is a 32-year-old Twitch content creator with various world records for Halo 2 speed runs and challenges. His favorite game is Halo 2 Classic, but he also plays a variety of other games such as Runescape, God of War and Dark Souls.

His Twitch channel has earned over 25,000 followers as he attempts to complete MoistCr1TiKaL’s challenge, putting him at around 32,000 followers total presently.

Multiple community members have expressed their praise for JerValiN, such as Halo community manager John Junyszek who tweeted, “He did it! Halo 2 LASO, deathless. Congratulations, @Jervalin 🏆.”

“Jervalin is actually an absolute King. I was sweating watching him and his family coming in to celebrate after he completed it was the most wholesome thing I’ve seen in years,” said HaloVFX, who makes popular fan animations based on the Halo franchise.

Community support has been overwhelmingly positive on Twitter, but JerValiN has expressed a desire to take a break from the Halo franchise and play other games such as Runescape. This feat is reminiscent of his run 2020 of the Halo 2 Anniversary, which had similar parameters.
